Welcome to Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club at Tryon Resort (formerly Cleghorn Plantation), one of the best places to play golf in Western North Carolina. Cleghorn is more than 18 holes of golf, it is an experience you will not soon forget. The views, the George Cobb design (famous for Quail Hollow Club and Par 3 at Augusta National), and the great playing conditions will give you four hours of solid enjoyment. Your best round at Cleghorn will have nothing to do with your score. It will be about the challenge you face on every tee box and how you handle the 18 adventures in front of you.
Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club at Tryon Resort has been acclaimed by the PGA as one of the best courses in North Carolina.
Golf Digest has also listed Cleghorn in their “Best Places to Play.” Golfnow.com has over 50 positive reviews of Cleghorn, and we have been voted “The #1 Golf Course in Rutherford County” multiple times by readers of the Rutherford Daily Courier newspaper. In 1764, land was granted to John McDowell from the Crown Governor of the Colony of NC. Mr. McDowell grew wheat, cotton and corn on his plantation. In 1775, the plantation was purchased by William Cleghorn, thus Cleghorn’s namesake! In 1837, the Manor House was built, the house survives to this day!
Cleghorn Plantation was passed down over the years until 1972 when it was transformed into Cleghorn Plantation Golf and Country Club by famous golf course designer George Cobb. Mr. Cobb has designed well over 100 golf courses, most famously the Augusta Par 3 Course and Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC.
